Your Wedding Ceremony is first and foremost a sacred, sacramental event. With this in mind we request that you review our Etiquette guidelines. If your ceremony takes place in the setting of a Mass please learn about the Church’s guidelines regarding the reception of Holy Communion. We ask that the bride and groom encourage their guests to follow these guidelines.
|Please note that the Basilica cannot make arrangements with the family and friends of the engaged couple, only with the couple directly. The Basilica of Saint Lawrence respectfully requests that these individuals direct their questions to the couple, rather than the Basilica Staff. The Basilica Staff will not comment on arrangements made by engaged couples. Family and friends are encouraged to visit this site to review our policies.
is the priest or deacon who presides over your ceremony. Active, registered members of the Basilica may request that one of our priests provide Pre-Cana preparation and preside over their ceremony.
Non-registered couples are responsible for obtaining their own Celebrant. The readiness of a couple to receive the Sacrament of Marriage is established by the priest that guides them through Pre-Cana - uniquely qualifying him to perform the ceremony. Our policy requires that non-parishioner couples seek to have the priest who prepares them preside at their wedding. Likewise, priests who are well known to the couple (such as friends or family) may also be considered. Foregoing these possibilities, we may be able to offer a list of local deacons who often offciate weddings at the Basilica.
Your Celebrant can help you choose prayers, readings, and devotions. For couples being prepared at the Basilica, we use the booklet
Together for Life
. Couples being prepared elsewhere may order this booklet online from
if they want to use it as a guide for planning their ceremony.
One of our Basilica Wedding Directors
will be responsible for the direction of your wedding. She will direct your Rehearsal to ensure that your ceremony incorporates your ideas while also keeping within the guidelines of liturgical and Basilica policies.
Using a Basilica Wedding Director is a requirement for having a wedding at the Basilica. Outside directors and consultants may assist if they choose, but may not direct your wedding.

Flower Girls and Ring Bearers
Children in the wedding party must be at least six years old – no exceptions.
Experience has shown that very young children find it intimidating to walk down the 75 foot aisle at the Basilica of Saint Lawrence with many unknown faces staring at them. Often their parents are in the wedding party and are not available to assist their children, or to calm them if they are nervous or frightened. This only adds unnecessary anxiety to the child, the child's parents, and the bride and groom. If children six and older are included in the wedding party, please be mindful of their unique needs and plan accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please email or call the parish office for possible alternatives.
The Basilica does not recommend the use of Unity Candles. They are liturgically inappropriate when the wedding ceremony includes the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Mass). Some Celebrants allow Unity Candles when a Catholic marries a non-Catholic and the ceremony celebrates the Sacrament of Marriage outside of the Mass. If a Unity Candle is used, this must be approved by your Celebrant. We do not provide these candles, sets can be purchased at Micahels or similar craft stores. A set should contain 2 tapers, 1 pillar, and the stand. Please let the Wedding Director know if you plan to use one.
